Reigning Miss Universe Catriona Gray has arrived in Pretoria, South Africa earlier this week to attend the finals of Miss South Africa 2019 pageant. She will join her predecessor, Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters to choose the next representative of South Africa at Miss Universe 2019.
Catriona shared with her six million Instagram followers how excited she was to be reunited with her Miss Universe sisters, Demi-Leigh and Tamaryn on her first trip to the rainbow nation. She also expressed her impression of this year’s contestants after the closed-door preliminary judging.
“Us judges definitely have a difficult job, but no doubt these ladies are bound to do amazing things,” Catriona wrote.
The fourth Filipina Miss Universe who is known for her support of the LGBTQI+ community attended the Feathers National LGBTI Campus Dialogue. The event, in partnership with Activate Wits, was held on Wednesday, August 7 at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Emthonjeni Centre Auditorium, in Johannesburg.
“Hearing about personal experiences on and off the campus of the LGBTQIA+ community here in South Africa taught me so much about the complexity of the challenges we’re (and I say we and not exclusively the LGBTQ+ community cause it involves ALL of us) up against and the changes we need to see in our communities.”
Miss South Africa 2019 will be held on Friday, August 9 at Times Square’s Sun Arena in Pretoria. It is the pageant’s 61st anniversary this year where last year’s winner and Miss Universe first runner-up Tamaryn Green will crown her successor at the end of the event.
