Maria Thattil edged out 27 other contestants to win the virtual Miss Universe Australia 2020 competition on Wednesday, October 28. She succeeds last year’s winner, Priya Serrao.
The 27-year-old Australian-born Indian beauty from Melbourne holds a degree in psychology and management. Besides working in People and Culture for the Victorian government, she is also a digital creator and a brand ambassador.
Miné Coetser and Tash Galgut were the first and second runners-up, respectively, while Maddison Coluccio and Daria Varlamova completed the Top 5 finalists.
The new Miss Universe Australia will represent the land down under at the 69th Miss Universe pageant, whose date and venue are yet to be announced.
“I conceptualize being Miss Universe Australia as holding a baton and running a race to progress women and girls at an international level, and creating a legacy so that when she passes the baton on the next titleholder, that woman will run further for women everywhere,” she said in an interview with Gcmag.
Australia has won the Miss Universe title twice with Kerry Anne Wells in 1972 and Jennifer Hawkins in 2004.
