Iris Salguero has been officially announced as Miss Universe Belize 2020. Her crowning ceremony was aired live from the Biltmore Plaza on Saturday, January 9.
The 24-year-old beauty from San Pedro succeeds Miss Universe Belize 2019 Destinee Arnold. She was selected from a virtual casting call where 15 applicants went through a series of interviews with the local and international panel of judges.
“As a woman who comes from humble beginnings, and who has had many life lessons, I want to be an image of inspiration, hope, and empowerment especially to the youth of our nation, to encourage our young women to take up space in male-dominated industries and influence our young men to treat our young ladies with equality and respect,” she said.
Iris is no stranger to pageantry as she has already joined major competitions such as Miss World in 2016 and Miss Earth in 2017. With her platform, she wants to raise her voice on relevant issues in her country such as the increasing crime rate affecting the youth, environmental protection, and domestic violence against women.
The new Miss Universe Belize will represent her country at the 69th Miss Universe pageant, whose date and venue are yet to be announced.
