Nova Stevens of Vancouver, British Columbia, was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2020 on Saturday, October 24 at John Bassett Theatre, Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto.
The 27-year-old Kenyan-born model, actress, passionate activist, and co-founder of the Freedom March Vancouver and Black Freedom Society edged out 39 other contestants to win the national competition.
“To me, winning this title means showing the world that there isn’t an ideal beauty, we are all beautiful regardless of color, shade, shape, physical attributes or whatever construct society has created to be considered more beautiful,” says her bio on the official Miss Universe Canada website.
Tamara Jemuovic finished the first runner-up while Jaime VandenBerg was the second runner-up. Svetlana Mamaeva and Sam Fraughton were third and fourth runners-up, respectively.
The new Miss Universe Canada will represent the Great White North at the 69th Miss Universe pageant, whose date and venue are yet to be announced.
Canada has won the Miss Universe crown twice with Karen Dianne Baldwin in 1982 and Natalie Glebova in 2005. The country was first represented at the pageant by a black woman in 1989 with Juliette Powell.
