Miss Universe Malaysia 2020: MUMO announces new format for gala night

Miss Universe Malaysia 2020 e-GalaThe Miss Universe Malaysia Organization (MUMO) announced that the crowning of the next Miss Universe Malaysia will take place online on Saturday, September 5 at 5 p.m.

Datin Elaine Daly, the national director of MUMO and Shweta Sekhon, Miss Universe Malaysia 2019 revealed that the e-Gala event will be streamed live on the newly-revamped website, with only the finalists and panel of judges present. The move is in line with social distancing measures put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tickets can be purchased to watch the show on the website, with 20% of proceeds to be channeled to a chosen charity. Further details of early bird ticket sales will be made available on the website and social media platforms.

The Top 18 finalists vying for the crown are (in alphabetical order) Adelina Chan Yin Ling, 27, Celine Foo, 26, Charissa Chong Su Huey, 26, Ching Poh Yee (Chloe), 25, Chua Xing Er (Xinger), 23, Francisca Luhong James, 25, Fung Wei Qing (Quinn), 24, Haylynn Tan Siau Thong, 21, Liew Chi Mun (Gladys), 24, Louisa Ananthan, 22, Neha Varma, 22, Ooi Erjun, 23, Prissha Gerald, 22, Pritha Manivannan, 27, Rindsay Rachelle Laige, 22, Serene Chai Yong Bin, 26, Yaw Mee Mee (Meme), 26, and Yong Meei Yeng, 27.

With the new format, viewers can influence the results of the competition as fans’ votes will count towards determining the next Miss Universe Malaysia, along with the winners of subsidiary titles Miss Body Beautiful and Best in Evening Gown.

Other subsidiary titles to be awarded are Miss La Jung Youthful Forever, Miss Auto Bavaria Elegance, Miss Dermalogica Healthy Skin, Miss Skinz Sanctuary Flawless Skin, Miss Strip Body Confidence, Miss Glojas Beautiful, Miss HABIB, Shawn Cutler Hair Award, Miss Congeniality, and Miss Online Personality.

This year’s e-Gala will be hosted by local personality Will Quah, and will feature a performance by teenage singer, Aqeesh.

The panel of judges will include Dato’ Hans Isaac, Actor, Director & Producer, Datin Selwinder Kaur, COO of Glojas by Smart International Aesthetic, Dr. Nicholas Lim, Medical Director & Aesthetic Medical Practitioner of La Jung Aesthetic Clinic, Deborah Henry, Miss Universe Malaysia 2012, Carven Ong, Creative Designer of Carven Ong Couture, Michelle Lam, Director of Esthetics International Group, Shawn Loong, Celebrity Stylist, Founder & Creative Director of Shawn Cutler Group of Salons and Elizabeth Lee, co-founder of Bowerhaus.

The Top 18 finalists were first revealed last December, and the competition was originally scheduled to be held in March but was put on hold temporarily due to the pandemic.

Miss Universe Malaysia 2020 will have the opportunity of a lifetime to represent Malaysia at the Miss Universe competition. Additionally, she will also receive a cash prize and sponsored prizes with a combined value of RM180,000 and a full education scholarship from HELP University.
